within themselves the city's ancient history, some historians even
identify the city with the ancient 11th century capital of Mayapur,
under the Jitari dynasty. Itanagar today is divided into two parts, each
10 km apart from each other, with the older one named Naharlagun.
Itanagar has been the capital of Arunachal Pradesh since 20th April
1974. The township is situated at 350 metres above mean sea level. No
railway enters Arunachal. But Indian Airlines and Vayudoot do serve
Tezu, Ziro and Pasighat. It's, in other words, India's largest
north-eastern state. Itanagar is under the huge influence of Tibetan
culture on the people living in this state. The beautiful yellow roofed
shrine that was declared as a holy place by the Tibetan spiritual
leader Dalai Lama provides an extremely beautiful view of the region.
This influence is also visualized as one walks through the by lanes of
Itanagar on can see people dressed in the local dress of the Tibetan
people.
