Panaji, the capital of the state of Goa, is also
the headquarters of the north Goa district. Panaji is a small and
charming city nestled on the left banks of river Mandovi. This city with
beautiful and historic, red roofed houses, with hints of Latin
architectural style, also boasts of many modern houses, with well laid
gardens, marble statues and also avenues lined with Gulmohar and Acassia
trees.
Panaji's famous fish and fruit market offers a visual impact in itself
with fresh and colorful fishes caught by the fishermen from nearby
villages being sold here right next to the sea. Panaji still has some
impact of the portuguese left on it and can be seen by the dresses and
also by the historic buildings of the area. Panaji city has come a long
way from being a small time fishing village to becoming on of the most
influential city in Goa. Panaji is also termed as the cultural capital
of Goa and is quite rich in terms of holding major hotels and shopping
plazas. Also in spite of all this Panaji also hosts Goa College of
Pharmacy, the Goa College of Art, and the Government Polytechnic. It
boasts of a cultural center-The Kala Academy, and a number of theater
complexes.
