Heritage Sites in Switzerland
Bellinzona (Ticino)
The Castles of Bellinzona, are located at the beginning of the Alps,
to their south. Built as defensive fortifications, the three castles
of Castelgrande, Castello Montebello and Castello Sasso Corbaro are
now landmarks of this town. Bellinzona has an ancient history. It
was first mentioned in 590 A.D., in an official record. You can view

Bern ( Schweizer Mittelland )
Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is a city where modernity and
tradition coexist. The Old town in Bern was declared a UNESCO World
Heritage site because of its medieval buildings, arcades, cathedrals
and fountains made of limestone. These beautiful buildings cover 6
sq km in the town and are partially encircled by the picturesque
Aare River. Established in 1191, Bern is a must visit on your tour
to Switzerland. The city also offers a grand view of Alpine peaks.
St. Gallen ( Eastern Switzerland / Liechtenstein )
The Abbey Precints of St.Gallen are home to a grand Baroque
Cathedral. The Library at the Abbey contains a collection of 150,000
books and 202,000 manuscripts from the Middle Ages. You can also see
an authentic 2,700-year old mummy in the Library. The Rococo
carvings within the library are considered the pinnacle of the
profane rococo art form in Switzerland.
Müstair ( Graubunden )
The Benedictine Convent of St. Johann at Mustair was declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its Carolingian cloister and
the church with many beautiful frescoes. This Alpine Convent is
looked after by a group of Benedictine nuns. Tourists can view the
cloister museum with its collection of artifacts and the elegant
church tower at the Abbey.
Monte San Giorgio (Ticino)
UNESCO has declared that the Ticinese region of Monte San Giorgio
will be listed as a UNESCO world heritage site because of the
numerous reptile and fish fossils found in this region. Apart from
fossil finds, Monte San Giorgio is also known for its abundant
species of fungi (over 550) and 3 spider species. Fossil relics
found in Monte San Giorgio can be viewed at the Paleontology Museums
in Zürich and Lugano.
Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn
The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region has been declared a World
Natural Heritage site by UNESCO. The Aletsch Glacier (23 Km long) is
the largest glacier in the Alps, and the beauty of the unique and
pristine Alpine ecosystem, is truly breathtaking. The
Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is the only site in the Alps to
be given UNESCO recognition.
UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch Schüpfheim/LU ( Central
Switzerland )
The UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch is a unique ecological region in the
Alps, situated between Lucerne and Bern. It is the first and so far
only Biosphere Reserve in Switzerland. The landscape in the
Entlebuch region is a mix of pre-alpine moor and karst areas. The
region offers beautiful scenery as well as a host of activities such
as hiking, golfing mountain-biking, and the hydrotherapy treatments
called Kneipp cures. Walk along a Seelensteg, a stepped wooden path
through a forest, view the gold washing and coal mining activities,
shop for local souvenirs and see the lifestyle of the local people
